Home/Glossary/Fundamental rights impact assessment (FRIA)

What is Fundamental rights impact assessment (FRIA)?

A fundamental rights impact assessment is an assessment, required by the EU AI Act for certain deployers of high-risk AI systems, of how the system could affect people's fundamental rights before it is first used. It covers intended use, affected groups, likely harms, human oversight and mitigation.

Article 27 sets out the requirement and the elements to cover, and requires notification of the result to the market surveillance authority. It applies to specified deployers, including public bodies and private entities providing public services; check the Article for the exact scope. A FRIA can complement a DPIA where both apply.
