What is ISO/IEC 42001?

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the international standard that specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an AI management system within an organisation. It applies to any organisation that provides or uses AI-based products or services, and organisations can be certified against it by accredited bodies.

The standard follows a plan-do-check-act approach and includes an AI policy, risk and impact assessment, objectives and an annex of controls. Certification applies to the organisation's management system, not to individual AI products, and it is not the same as meeting the EU AI Act.
