What is AI management system (AIMS)?

An AI management system is the set of interrelated policies, objectives, processes and responsibilities an organisation uses to manage AI responsibly across its lifecycle. ISO/IEC 42001 specifies requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving one, using a plan-do-check-act approach.

An AIMS is an organisation-level system, not a single tool. It typically includes an AI policy, risk and impact assessment processes, roles, controls, monitoring and internal review. Organisations can have their AIMS assessed against ISO/IEC 42001 by an accredited certification body, but adopting the standard does not by itself prove compliance with any law.
