What is AI governance?

AI governance is the set of policies, roles, processes and controls an organisation uses to direct and oversee how AI is developed, bought and used, so that it is lawful, safe and accountable. It covers inventory, risk, oversight, evidence and decisions across the whole AI lifecycle.

A typical programme names accountable owners, keeps an inventory of AI systems, classifies their risk, applies controls, records approvals and reviews systems as they change. Frameworks such as the NIST AI RMF and standards such as ISO/IEC 42001 describe how to organise this work.

Governance is broader than compliance with any single law. It also addresses organisational risk appetite and ethical commitments.
