What is AI compliance?

AI compliance is the state of meeting the legal, regulatory and contractual requirements that apply to how an organisation builds, buys or uses AI, and being able to show it. It is narrower than AI governance and depends on the organisation's own practices and evidence, not on software alone.

Requirements differ by role and use case. Under the EU AI Act, for example, obligations depend on whether the organisation is a provider or a deployer and on the risk category of the system. Data protection law such as the GDPR can apply at the same time.

Governance is the wider management system that makes compliance repeatable; compliance is one outcome it supports.
