What is Provider?

Under the EU AI Act, a provider is a person or organisation that develops an AI system, or has one developed, and places it on the market or puts it into service under its own name or trademark, whether for payment or free. Providers carry most obligations for high-risk systems.

Provider duties for high-risk systems include risk management, technical documentation, a quality management system, conformity assessment, CE marking and post-market monitoring. A company that builds an AI system for its own internal use under its own name can also be a provider.
