What is NIST AI RMF?

The NIST AI Risk Management Framework is a voluntary framework from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology to help organisations manage AI risks and build trustworthiness considerations into the design, development, use and evaluation of AI systems. Version 1.0 was released on 26 January 2023.

It is organised around four core functions, Govern, Map, Measure and Manage. NIST has also published a Generative AI Profile (NIST AI 600-1, July 2024) as a companion resource. Following the framework is a way to structure risk work; it is not a certification.
