What is Notified body?

A notified body is an independent conformity assessment body that a Member State has designated and notified to the European Commission to carry out third-party conformity assessment under EU law. Under the EU AI Act, it assesses certain high-risk AI systems and their providers' quality management systems.

Not every high-risk AI system needs a notified body. Article 43 allows internal control for most Annex III systems, while some biometric systems and products covered by sectoral law involve third-party assessment. A notified body's identification number appears next to the CE marking where it took part.
