What is Technical documentation?

Technical documentation is the file a provider of a high-risk AI system must create and keep up to date to show the system meets the EU AI Act's requirements. It describes the system, its design, data, testing, risk management and monitoring plan, and is available to authorities on request.

Article 11 requires it before the system is placed on the market, and Annex IV sets the minimum contents. Providers of general-purpose AI models have separate documentation duties under Article 53. Good documentation is written for a reviewer who has never seen the system.
