What is Human oversight?

Human oversight means designing and operating an AI system so that people can understand its outputs, monitor it, intervene and, where needed, override or stop it. The aim is to prevent or reduce risks to health, safety and fundamental rights, and to counter over-reliance on automated outputs.

Article 14 of the EU AI Act requires high-risk systems to be designed for effective oversight, and deployers must assign oversight to people with the necessary competence, training and authority. Oversight is only meaningful if reviewers have time, information and real power to disagree; a rubber-stamp step does not count.
