Home/Glossary/General-purpose AI model (GPAI)

What is General-purpose AI model (GPAI)?

A general-purpose AI model is an AI model that shows significant generality and can competently perform a wide range of distinct tasks, whichever way it is placed on the market, and can be integrated into many downstream systems. Large language models are the usual example.

Article 53 of the EU AI Act sets obligations for providers of such models, including technical documentation, information for downstream providers, a copyright policy and a training-content summary. Article 51 sets out how a model is classified as posing systemic risk, with a presumption linked to training compute.
